Walter Rosenblum a Norfolk, 1975

Walter Rosenblum è nato a New York l'1 ottobre 1919. Tra il 1924 e il 1937 frequenta le scuole pubbliche di New York, la Seward Park High School, il College of the city of New York.

Dal 1937 al 1950 è membro attivo dell'associazione Photo League e realizza il reportage “Pitt Street”. Le sue prime fotografie vengono pubblicate da Ralph Steiner sul quotidiano “PM”. Nel 1939 è assistente di Eliot Elisofon, fotografo di Life e studia con Paul Strand e Lewis Hine alla Photo League. Dal 1943 al 1945 è fotografo e cineoperatore durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e diviene il primo fotografo ad entrare nel campo di concentramento di Dachau.

Importante è anche l'attività di docente: nel 1947 insegna fotografia all' Art Department del Brooklin College, dove raggiungerà la qualifica di Professor Emeritus; dal 1952 al 1976 insegna alla Yale Summer School of Music and Art; dal 1956 al 1965 insegna al Department of Photography, The Cooper Union di New York.

Numerosi sono i premi ricevuti: Il National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1976); New York State Council of the Arts (1977);Guggheneim Fellowship in Photography (1980); Professional Staff Congress- City University of New York Award (1985); nel 1997 riceve una delle cinque Gold Medal internazionali.

Muore a New York il 23 gennaio 2006.
